The Realistic Success Recovery Society in Surrey, founded in 2007 operates three 1st stage supportive recovery houses with 10 men in each house. Registered with BC Ministry of Health Assisted Living Registry. We provide long-term bed based, abstinence drug and alcohol treatment program for men based on ethical values, addiction counselling and the 12-step program.
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Counsellor to join our dynamic and professional team. We are committed to providing genuine, collaborative, creative and ethical therapeutic services to men.
The Addictions Counsellor leads a group session for 10-12 men daily; provides one/one counselling; attends and shares at an AA meetings with the residents; and manages the personal care plans for residents. Counsellors also attend Society events throughout the year and volunteer at several community events, outside normal working hours.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Establishes rapport with clients; provides emotional support and supportive counselling; assists with problem solving; issues of daily living and managing behaviors. Acts as a role model to facilitate appropriate social behaviors. Participates in activities to support skill development and lifelong addiction recovery. Brings lived experience with addiction; an understanding and support for AA as well as the perspective of egalitarian principles, recognition of oppressive systems and gender roles to the counselling work. Prepares and updates case notes. Manages counsellors filing system.
- Leads group counselling session – 1-2 sessions per day during workweek,
- Provides one/one counselling to residents regularly.
- Must have an extensive personal knowledge and experience with 12 step-based recovery. Preferably own home group and sponsor.
- Attends an AA meeting daily during the week in the community, with residents.
- Demonstrates competency in leadership skills, work and service.
- Serves as coach, mentor and positive role model.
- Assists to promote an environment that facilitates innovation, creative solutions and empowerment.
- Engages in the development of inter-personal relationships that promotes dignity and respect.
- Works independently, demonstrating initiative with limited supervision.
- Proficiency in computers, reading daily reports.
- Works cooperatively as part of a small team, including another addictions counselling therapist.
Qualifications
Alcohol and Drug Addiction Certificate combined with lived experience of addiction. Registration in Professional Organization. Demonstrate ability to work independently. Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively. Demonstrate ability to deal with others effectively in a calm manner. Understand and maintain client/facilitator boundaries. A minimum of three years sobriety is required. Requires a high degree of confidentiality. Must be punctual. Must have a current criminal record check. Drivers License.
